The Battle of ThunderClan Camp was a 3-day confrontation between a horde of around 100,000 attack dogs under the command of Princess Shira of the Kennel Dogs, and a smaller band of 156 PetClan regulars commanded by Colonel Chudnovski. Shira's massive horde came dangerously close to destroying the Camp's tiny garrison but was ultimately repelled. The attacking horde lost tens of thousands, while the defending garrison only lost 16.

According to many of the garrison members, ThunderClan members Bluestar and Snowfur were among the garrison causing a flood of controversy.

Prelude Edit

PetClan is a large collection of cats located to the east of the Forest Territories. Their worship-like connection to StarClan prompts them to fight to the death to protect them. This may have contributed to their intervention with Twoleg activities on the Forest Territories.

The war with the Twolegs started when PetClan skirmishers attacked a small number of Tree-eater-bearing Twolegs. They then besieged, captured, and burned the Twolegplace nearby. That wouldn't have been so bad if they weren't as aggressive as they were (StarClan themselves had warned them not to attack the Twolegplace which PetClan refused to heed. When they did attack, they killed all Twolegs and Dogs there while sparing the kittypets).

Afterward, the army temporarily fortified the old camps. These garrisons weren't expecting an attack from the Twolegs. But the Twolegs had an army PetClan was unaware of : a 10,000,000 strong horde of attack dogs led by Prince Jordash and his sister, Princess Shira. Shira had been growing jealous of her brother's glorious victories in the north, but she was a deputy ruler, not a battlefield commander. Nevertheless, she secretly took a 100,000 strong detachment of the attack dog horde and marched them to the now destroyed Twolegplace.

Day 1 Edit

Shira's horde arrived before dawn. She immediately stormed and overran ShadowClan camp's garrison. As the sun rose, the horde attacked the garrison at WindClan Camp, overrunning it with ease. Mid-morning saw the fall of RiverClan Camp whose garrison scattered and routed without firing a shot. Now, only ThunderClan Camp remained under PetClan control.

6 year old Chudnovski was in command of a temporary garrison of 156 regulars. Lieutenant Colonel Jake acted as his second. In Chudnovski's accounts, and those of many other garrison members, this is where Bluestar and Snowfur, both pronounced dead by ThunderClan, entered their home.

Bluestar and Snowfur were sisters who had been taken from their home camp. They escaped only to find the camp abandoned. Now, they returned to find the camp flooded with cats. They wore deep-blue collors with a cat-sized repeater rifle attached to the right side. The ends were tipped with a tail-long bayonet which was perfect for close combat.

As the sisters went about the camp, a sentry by the short bramble wall between the Leader's Den and the Apprentices Den spotted a large number of dogs gathering on the West side. He shouted his sightings to which the sentries on top of the Leader's Den also shouted sightings. Chudnovski ordered the 6 officers and 144 regulars to the West side of the Camp. The 6 she-cats, who served as nurses, hid in the Medicine Cat's Den.

The Regulars gathered and formed ranks at the bramble wall whose tangled vine-like stems were lined with spare bayonets, a deadly defensive measure. The bayonets were only tied to the outside of the brambles, allowing the defenders to approach them without impaling themselves.

While it was true that Shira's force outnumbered the garrison nearly 1000/1, it was comprised of conscripts who had little or no combat experience and was poorly supplied and ill-equipped to fight a determined garrison with superior firepower. The only real advantage they had was superior numbers.

It was now sunhigh. Shira sent a 1,000 strong force against the bramble wall. The charging tide of underfed dogs were met with a hailstorm of rifle fire from the garrison, and suffered heavy casualties, before slamming into the bayonet-lined brambles where many were impaled. The regulars' bayonets prevented the dogs, equipped only with claws, from engaging them effectively. The dogs soon found themselves repeatedly charging, falling back, reforming, and recharging in waves of around 1,000. None of the dogs breached the bramble wall; the few who tried were quickly killed or clumsily impaled themselves on the bayonet-lined brambles. One dogs managed to slice a private's throat before being bayoneted. Her body was tossed over the brambles.

A few hundred dogs attempted to gain entry via an unfortified pathway to the Leader's Den's Roof, but the path was so narrow that only one dog could at a time could use it, albeit with difficulty as they tried to maintain their footing. To make things more difficult, the roof was occupied by 30 regulars who were pouring fire into the main force. A few of them spotted dogs climbing the path and quickly ran them through. After hours of this, Shira sent in 1,000 of her elite dogs, however they fared no better than the previous attacks.

Around mid-afternoon, Shira called off the attack. She had clearly underestimated the garrison. Her casualties mounted to between 1,000 and 2,000 dead and around 6,000 wounded, 3,000 of them fatally. The garrison's casualties numbered only 1 dead and 3 wounded. As the sun set, Shira moved her force to the south. The hills here would mask her troops' movements. As night fell, local kittypets, who were active at night began yowling loudly. Shira's dogs weren't prepared for a noisy night. The constant yowling prevented them from getting much sleep. This would hurt them the next day.

Inside the camp, Chudnovski ordered 30 regulars to remain by the brambles in the case of another attack there. He also stationed the rest of the regulars around the main camp's perimeter. Some slept in the Nursery, right next to the Leader's Den's east side. Bluestar visited with Jake, who she hadn't seen since her early warrior days. Snowfur slept in the Warriors' Den on the East Wall. The garrison fell into a deep sleep as the yowling played on through the night.

Day 2 Edit

As dawn arrived on the second day, the garrison woke to a beautiful sunrise. They then made preparations for another attack. Chudnovski ordered the regulars to secure what he thought was the full perimeter. Bluestar and Snowfur then showed him the Sandy Hollow behind the Nursery and Medicine Cat's Den. Chudnovski, having realized he had more walls to defend than he thought, had them fortified. The fortifications were completed and manned just as Shira launched a bigger assault on the Sandy Hollow. The regulars met them with surging rifle fire followed by bayonet thrusts once the attackers reached the walls. Once again, the attackers had little success. Some of them charged the Bramble Wall and Leader's Den. Others swooped around the East side where they too came under fire.

A large number of them found a potential weak spot on the Northeast Corner, the Elder's Den, which comprised of a hollow log that had fallen over many moons ago. As this was reported, Jake led a small squad of 6 cats, possibly including Bluestar, to defend there. During the carnage that unfolded, several dogs managed to dig their claws into Jake, who fell to the ground. A counter charge drove the dogs away, but it was too late. Jake died of hemorrhage minutes later.

By late afternoon, the dogs had once again failed to capture the camp. Their losses jumped up to between 6,000 and 9,000 dead and around 8,000 wounded, 5,000 fatally. Shira was speechless. Not one dog had made it into the camp alive and the remaining troops' morale was plummeting. Shira needed a miracle.

A rogue wandered into Shira's bed that night and frightened her. After being yelled at, the rogue notified Shira of several weak spots along the camp's perimeter. Shira was so pleased that she invited him to bed her. Afterward, she made preparations to take advantage of her newly acquired knowledge.

Inside the camp, the garrison mourned over Jake. The casualties had crept up to 4 dead and 12 wounded. Jake was the only fatality in the Elder's Den. The other two were killed in the Sandy Hollow. Chudnovski knew another attack was inevitable. He asked the garrison whether they should abandon the camp of fight to the death. No one picked the former. The nurses were tasked with defending the Nursery, should the dogs attack it. Bluestar and Snowfur volunteered to help them and were taught how to load and fire their rifles, Bluestar's belonging to Jake. Afterward, the garrison fell asleep under the stars. Shira's army was once again tormented by the local kittypets' yowling.

Day 3 Edit

The third and final day of the battle began with preparations for an attack. Barricades were constructed in front of and behind the Nursery where Bluestar, Snowfur, and the nurses prepared for battle and casualties. The regulars shared their last wishes before battle; there was no doubt that cats would die today.

At sunhigh, Shira sent in her ultimate attack which was once again met with rifle fire and bayonet thrusts. The dogs then encircled the camp, clustering around the weak spots. 12 regulars, who were stationed in the Elder's Den fired a few volleys before realizing they had forgotten to attach their bayonets and running to the Medicine Cat's Den where spare guns and bayonets were stored, but leaving the Elder's Den undefended. The dogs poured through the den and into the camp. After attaching their bayonets, the 12 cats saw the torrent of invading dogs and rushed to stem it losing a private in the process.

The 8 she-cats in the Nursery opened fire when the dogs began entering the camp. The dogs ran straight toward the Nursery and quickly surrounded it. The odds against the Nursery's defenders now vastly exceeded those of the regulars and officers outside. They kept themselves calm and fired into the dogs. The attack was close to wavering but hunger drove them on. Hundreds attempted to force an entry by prying the arched brambles apart. Tens succeeded but were trapped in the tight spaces and were killed. Eventually, all the dogs around the Nursery were dead or dying.

The dogs attacking the Gorse Tunnel found themselves to big too fit and rifle fire from the wall in front of them drove them eastward into the mob of dogs outside the Elder's Den. The regulars stationed there stemmed the attack and drove the dogs out. The dogs massed against the East Wall and attempted to climb over it while taking fire from the regulars there. So many dogs tried to scale the wall that they sent others to a clumsy landing on the ground. The few who made it were simply pushed off the wall. The dogs there soon retreated.

Those attacking the Bramble Wall and Leader's Den had no more success. The gunfire there was inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers, who quickly formed a chaotic mess of dogs. The narrow pathway once again prevented the attackers there from reaching the roof, while the bayonet-lined brambles and rifles halted any dog who ventured within their reach in their tracks. Several cats were killed, but the attackers finally skedaddled.

The dogs attacking the Sandy Hollow had more success. The regulars there had formed a porous line. A few cats were killed before the line retreated to the barricade behind the Nursery, the dogs pouring in after them. A hailstorm of gunfire shrouded the field in front of the barricade in smoke. When the firing stopped and the smoke lifted, The Sandy Hollow was littered with dead and dying dogs.

Shira then sent a second assault on the Bramble Wall to no avail. She then sent a third charge against the North Wall. Seeing the sheer number of dogs, Chudnovski ordered a withdrawal to the barricade in front of the Nursery. Once there, they unleashed a flood of gunfire from both the barricade and the Nursery, plus fire from the roof of the Leader's Den. The firing continued for hours. When it finally ended, there was little noise, aside from the deep breathing of the garrison. When the smoke lifted the garrison was astonished. Dead and dying dogs were everywhere. The cats carefully made their way to the perimeter to find all the dogs gone. The Battle of ThunderClan Camp was over.

Casualties And Reasons For Outcome Edit

Shira had called off the attack around late afternoon, humiliated. Her total casualties numbered around 42,000 dead and nearly as many wounded. The survivors' morale was reduced to shreds, forcing her to return to her kingdom.

The garrison's casualties were surprisingly low, only 16 dead and 30 wounded. There are many reasons why PetClan won the battle and took so few casualties. I can only list a few.

One reason why PetClan won has to do with the camp itself. It consisted of a cluster of structures within a walled area that included the Sandy Hollow. The walls and brambles were natural defenses that made an assault difficult, though it was probably never intended to withstand an attack of this scale.

Another reason was the professionalism of the garrison. The 144 regulars and 6 officers were veterans who had fought against filibusters for moons. They also held an advantageous position. All they had to do was defend the camp. Shira had to take it by force which was harder to do. Also, the garrison had a good reason to resist as fiercely as they did : All three of the other camps had been overrun without much effort from the attackers, leaving them the last cats standing against Shira's army.

Another reason has to do with Shira's army. Not only was it poorly trained and organized, but it was also under-supplied, intended to prompt the troops to fight to the end to eat. The army had no experienced troops, (all of the dogs were conscripts who had been forced to join the expedition. They only used their claws for combat), and, thus, suffered from morale loss. Also, Shira had no experience commanding an army, especially one of the size she led to the Forest territories. Her poor leadership meant she couldn't coordinate attacks. She embarked on her failed expedition due to jealousy over her older brother, Prince Jordash, and her own personal desire for glory and fame. The fact that her army was able to capture three other camps without any casualties led to an overconfidence in her army, (only 1,000 dogs participated in any one of the other attacks on the camps they conquered). This overconfidence prevented her from engaging her troops effectively. Had she sent all of her troops at once, ThunderClan Camp's garrison would've have been able to hold the camp for very long.

Aftermath Edit

Shira returned to her kingdom to a very unpleasant welcoming. Her father was furious at his daughter's foolishness and, despite Shira begging him for mercy, sentenced her to permanent banishment. Her army was disbanded and her life ruined.

ThunderClan Camp remained in PetClan possession for years until PetClan finally won the war against the Twolegs and allowed the Clans to return to their old homes.

Bluestar, Snowfur, and Chudnovski became friends and lived together in his house. They ultimately starred in a movie about the battle, as did Shira and many of the dogs who served in her army. The movie was Shira's only appearance on film. She spent the next 4 years in banishment and traveled to the Sun-Drown Place where she committed suicide. Bluestar and Snowfur lived the rest of their lives as elders in ThunderClan. Chudnovski retired from military duty and returned to his house where he was murdered by the same rogue who told Shira about the camp's weak spots. That rogue later embarked on a criminal rampage that ultimately cost him his life. He never revealed his name, so his identity remains a mystery.

Conclusion Edit

From a military standpoint, The Battle of ThunderClan Camp proved insignificant. The camps had no strategic value and could've been abandoned. From a religious standpoint, the battle was more important than the garrison could've imagined. Had they failed, the Clans would've been destroyed. The triumph of the garrison showed the Kennel dogs that PetClan was stronger than they, and, thus, they never launched another attack on PetClan. After the war, PetClan returned to their territory, but are ready for the next invasion of the Clans.
